THE RING coming soon to San Francisco!

On May 18th members of the press were treated to a panel discussion with some of the singers from San Francisco Opera's upcoming Ring Cycle.  Seeing Wotan (bass-baritone Greer Grimsley,  Alberich (bass-baritone Falk Struckmann), Sigmund (tenor Brandon Jovanovich) and Fricka (mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton) in their street clothes brought the actual operas closer to mind and increased the anticipation of seeing them on stage in costume(and of course singing rather than speaking).  Each of them spoke with great enthusiasm for the production as a whole and for their own parts in the overall drama.

A vast musical and dramatic spectacle of gods, mortals, corruption and redemption, Wagner’s Ring cycle is titanic in scope:  four operas lasting 17 hours and performed over the course of a week.  This is the first time in seven years that San Francisco has put together this monumental an event.

The Ring runs for three cycles in June, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday evenings and Sunday matinees  (June 12-17, 19-24 and 26-July 1) Complementing the opera performances, there are a number of ancillary events taking place throughout the city, some of which have already started.  They include lectures, films, workshops and other concerts.  It promises to be a Ringhead’s paradise.
